Dr. Nelson Makes History as First SGM-A Faculty Member Promoted to Associate Professor
Sgt. Maj. Academy staff were appointed as Assistant Professors during the opening ceremony for Class 76. The ceremony took place on August 12 at the NCO Leadership Center of Excellence on Fort Bliss, TX.
Sept. 2, 2025 - Dr. Robert A. Nelson, assigned to the Sergeants Major Academy at the NCO Leadership Center of Excellence, Fort Bliss, is the first faculty member promoted to Associate Professor. The promotion was approved by the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College (CGSC), effective August 12, 2025, and recognizes Nelson’s sustained excellence in teaching and contributions to the field. The Associate Professor rank at CGSC signifies a significant achievement, requiring an earned doctorate and five years of demonstrably successful teaching experience at the Assistant Professor level. Alternatively, exceptional leadership, sustained outstanding teaching, and recognized subject-matter expertise may substitute for a doctorate in cases of preeminent practical expertise critical to the NCOLCoE. Dr. Nelson’s promotion reflects his fulfillment of these requirements, showcasing sustained excellence in education within his subject-matter expertise. He has demonstrated leadership through curriculum development, serving as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) for the Sergeant Major Course (SMC) in external engagements, and active participation in regional and national organizations. This promotion acknowledges not merely time served, but a body of work judged by peers as consistently high-quality and indicative of a leading practitioner within the military profession. The NCOLCoE congratulates Dr. Nelson on this well-deserved achievement and looks forward to his continued contributions to the education and development of future Army leaders.
